COLOMBIAN CASE

In 2010, Professor Luis Miguel Bermúdez arrived at the Gerardo Paredes Educational Institution. The institution is located in the town of Suba in Bogotá. There, he discovered a major problem that significantly affected students: sex education.

There are cases of gender violence, bullying and above all, teenage pregnancies. For this reason, he began working on the creation of a pedagogical model for sexual education or sexual citizenship, as he calls it. For this, he relied on the young people he taught classes to.

Thanks to this, his effort has been recognized worldwide as a success story in reducing teenage pregnancies. In addition, he was chosen as one of the 10 best teachers in the world and was nominated for the Global Teacher Prize. This recognition, sponsored by Bill Gates, rewards teachers who have generated a positive impact in their community.

  1. In Colombia sex education have been a taboo topic since I have memory. This is a big problem because that implies an increase in early pregancy, sexual abuse and sexually transmited diseases. I did not know about the amazing work of this professor, is good to know that there are pedagogical models for sexual education or sexual citienzhip in our country.
